You know. I am not a fan of 16-bit consoles era. I hate how they got obsessed with more colors. And as result a very exaggerated colorization. Ugly gradients, with too much contrast and too smooth color transition between light and dark areas. I suspect the idea was to make it look more 3D.
Another thing of the games of that era is physics. It’s really crappy often. And it’s really strange. Because NES has excellent physics in many games. I do not know how to explain this.
Alien Soldier has both of these issues. Maybe not as much as some other games. However the gameplay compensate those. It’s quite enjoyavle. The game might be hard for a casual player. It takes time to get used to. Might be very confusing at first. Recommend to read some faq on controls. As this game not give a tutorial levels explanation of each thing.
You have various weapons. And various moves/abilities like dash, hover in the air, defense ball and more. And you will need to learn to use them. I mean the use of various moves and various weapons. It might feel a bit complex at first.
So that’s not a plug and play type of game. But requires to build a skill.
The game is run and gun type. It has tons of bosses. A lot of them. It reminds of Contra Hard Corps and Gunstar Heroes. So if you looking for good and challenging run and gun, this is it. But requires learning to build a skill.
It’s quite hard game. It has 2 difficulties. Which is a joke – Super Easy, Super Hard. And the easy one is not easy at all.

I created poll in our Russian TGL fan group with Nintendo included. It’s too small community, but seems the less liked company is Square Enix. And a lot of people don’t know what to answer. The last option is “I am not sure”. And it has even more votes than Square Enix. As one guy said in comment – “it’s a question of the type who you like more mom or dad?”. From Twitter it seems more people would refuse on Konami.
I am sure the answers would vary depending on the community type. English speaking TGL community might have different result.
Yacht Club Games posted new Cyber Shadow Story Trailer. What interesting about this game that it seems heavily inspired by Solbrain(A.K.A. Shatterhand) and Yami no Shigotonin Kage (A.K.A. Shadow of the Ninja / Blue Shadow). But people compare it to other games like Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, The Messenger and so on. It means that Natsume’s games was not that popular. And I am happy to see there is some kind of revival.
I even wanted to write a review of Solbrain (A.K.A. Shatterhand), but didn’t. In short I can say that the game had amazing potential. And it was quite close to it. The main problem was in the level design. I think level design could be much better there. It’s still an amazing game for NES/Famicom. The other problem is that you can collect double combination of the Alpha and Beta boxes and get to the boss with super power. Then it’s piece of cake to beat any of the bosses. Making the bosses a bit pointless.
So it is great that someone is taking the potential of kinda unfairly forgotten games and continue developing it. Into a modern pixel art ninja platformer.
Lets have a look at Blaster Master Zero 2. A sequel to Blaster Master Zero. This time with traveling between planets. It looks great. Has many weapons and upgrades. Funny thing with charging your tank with fall down from bigger height. Tho the guy coming out of the tank seems to die too easy when fall down from a height that’s not looking so big.
I am sure everyone here thinking the same thing. That’s what also could be done with The Guardian Legend ?? Hahaha!(hiding crying) Who knows if this ever happens, but yeah. By the way, if you did not know, there is fan made sequel Guardian Legend: Shadow of Naju. It’s not that professional as BMZ2, but it’s not bad at all, I liked it.

Rygar on NES was one of those games that felt like entire another world. It felt really big at that time. Great mysterious atmosphere and exploration feeling. Ed Findlay trying to create some kind of Rygar remake or sequel. He called it Rygar Vengeance and it can be found on his site https://www.retrogamer3.com/ . In case site not works he also has his youtube channel.
At the time I write this the game is beta version 1.4. Below I post some screenshots. And the only short gameplay I found is in the Ed’s youtube teaser video 3 years ago. I’ll post it below screenshots.

Rollie is a new NES game by the guy under nickname Optomon/Optovania. He is the creator of The Guardian Legend: Secret Edition. And also a number of nice mods. Now he created his very own game from scratch.
Another game similar to ours Zaider – Battle of Peguss (超戦士ザイダーバトルオブペガス). You can walk out of the ship and walk in somewhere. I don’t know details. There is no walkthrough around. The game is on MSX 1986. Ability to walk inside buildings seems interesting. I read that weapon(s?) can be upgraded. The terrible scrolling is not in this game only. It is quite common for MSX games back then.
Also on nicovideo I found probably a remix of the title theme. Sounds nice so I adding it.
